To change the Transmission Fluid in a 2002 Volvo S60, first, ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and raise it securely. Remove the transmission fluid pan's drain plug to let the old fluid drain out completely, and replace the drain plug afterward. Next, remove the transmission pan to replace the filter, if applicable, and clean the pan before reassembling it. Finally, refill the transmission with the appropriate type of new fluid through the dipstick tube, checking the level as you go.
It's a sealed transmission. You'll have to take it to a Volvo dealership.
I found that a mechanic that used non Volvo transmission fluid caused this problem in my 2002. Once it was replaced with genuine Volvo transmission fluid it stopped surging.
its in the bottom hose

7 quarts if just a fluid change.
Approx 5 quarts
I believe this car has a sealed transmission and so the fluid cannot be changed.
There is NO drain plug! To change fluid you have to remove the transmission pan.
I do it at about 50K miles.
