For the 1.8T, the sensor is located near the oil filter, set back into a small alcove just above the oil pan and between the oil filter and the end of the engine block nearest the transmission. It's easiest to reach it from below. BEFORE YOU REMOVE IT: it's a good idea to clean up as much grime from the area as possible so you don't intorduce more dirt into that area. There is a 10mm bolt above the sensor; remove it completely. (You'll need about 2" length on the socket.) Then you need to wrestle the sensor out. There's an O-ring on the sensor that prevents it from coming out easily, although it will rotate in place. I had to pry mine out using a screwdriver. Once you pop it out 1/8" it will then be free. Pull it straight out. I don't have any knowledge about other engines, sorry.

To change the crankshaft sensor on a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, first disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Locate the crankshaft position sensor, which is usually found near the bottom of the engine block, and disconnect the electrical connector. Remove any bolts securing the sensor, then carefully pull it out. Install the new sensor by reversing the steps: insert the new sensor, secure it with bolts, reconnect the electrical connector, and finally reconnect the battery.

On a 1996 VW Jetta 2.0, the crankshaft positioning sensor is located near the bottom of the engine, typically on the transmission bell housing or the engine block. It is usually positioned close to the flywheel or crankshaft pulley, making it accessible from underneath the vehicle. To replace or inspect it, you may need to lift the car for better access.

What is a VW Jetta engine speed sensor?

The engine speed sensor provides the ECM with a crankshaft position signal. The ECM uses the signal to determine a crankshaft reference point (Top Dead Center) and calculate engine speed (RPM.) The signal is also used by the On-Board Diagnostic system for misfire detection. The ignition system will not operate if the ECM does not receive an engine speed sensor input.
