Timing belt is not usually a job you do yourself unless you are somewhat mechanically inclined. A serpentine belt can be changed easily but the timing belt is internal and usually requires the waterpump to be changed as well. My advice is to find some videos on YouTube or a vw forum.
Had the same problem with mine. The dealership told me it was the backup light switch. I had the same problem, as do 99% of VW beetle owners. There was a recall on the Brake Light Switch. Call your dealer and they should change it for free. I did. It worked for a bit, but now i think one of my brake lights is out again.
Your VW Beetle check engine light comes on when there is a problem with one of a number of sensors on the vehicle. Take the car to the dealership to have them determine the engine problem and reset the light.
65 should have kingpins
VW will tell you that the transmission fluid & fuel filter should never be changed. My Service writer @ the dealership says they should bechecked/ changed wth every tuneup. When I took my Beetle to a local garage, the mechanic changed my fuel filter and showed me how it was full of water (my car was running rough). Anyway, call a VW dealership service dept. and ask them to show you how to do this.
Go to your nearest VW dealership parts dept. They can show you exactly where it is by looking it up in the microfilm/computer. It should cost you a dime.
Replace it every 36,000 miles.
$300-500
It should.. I have a 79 1600cc in my 65 beetle.
It should be the same as a '99. See here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_change_a_1999_vw_head_lamp
You should buy a new VW Beetle (Mexican 1977-1998) but you should not buy a VW New Beetle. They are the most difficult cars to work on, but they are very cute!!
Every 5,000 miles with conventional oil and every 8,000 miles with synthetic.
You should call a Toyota Dealership. I believe the seatbelts are covered via some sort of something. I've had two replaced for free and not at the dealership where the car was purchased.
