To fix the mass airflow sensor (MAF) on a BMW X5, first, disconnect the vehicle’s battery and locate the MAF sensor, typically found between the air filter and the engine. Clean the sensor using a specialized MAF cleaner to remove dirt and debris; avoid using regular cleaners as they can damage the sensor. If cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, consider replacing the sensor with a new one, ensuring all connections are secure before reconnecting the battery. Finally, reset the vehicle's ECU to clear any error codes and check for proper functionality.

There are several reasons why your car is experiencing this problem, I could be a bad mass airflow sensor, bad DME, clogged catalytic converter, bad fuel pressure regulator, or bad fuel pump. Each if these would take a bit of explanation. I'd recommend that you buy a Bentley manual for this vehicle, and follow the diagnostics for each of these possibilities.
I think I have to do the same thing on my 02 Taurus. I know that the Mass Airflow sensor is located on the air filter assembly. The fix seems simple enough. I can send you pics of the part if needed. Just curious, what are your symptoms? Sluggish performance? Stalling?
