The knob itself should turn counter clock wise and unscrew from the gear shifter. On some cars there may be a small screw you'll need to loosen which helps hold the knob in place.
pull the shift boot down. loosen the jam nut under the shift knob then unscrew the shift knob.
First remove the shift knob pattern (it can be pried out with a small screw driver). Next remove the alignment pin with a pair of pliers. Then the shift knob can be unscrewed.

To remove the gear shift knob on the SLK 320, first pry the cover from the gear shift knob. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the screw in the center of the knob. This will then allow the knob to be removed.
Try twisting it and then get a manual for it. Try Chiltons or Haynes.

To remove the console shift knob on the AT 1993 Olds Achieva, first pry the cover from the top of the shift knob. Then, access the single screw inside the cover of the shift knob and turn it counter-clockwise to release the knob.
You should be able to unscrew the shift knob itself. Just turn it counter-clockwise until it gets lose; finally, remove it. You should remove the plastic shift knob plate after unscrewing the knob. What you remove should resemble the shift knob u are using to replace it with. If not, then I'm sorry, I don't have the answer you need. If so, just screw on the new shift knob until it is tight and in the correct direction. Snap the new shift knob plate in to place.. go test it peace Ummm do you even own a VW????? I didn't think so. The shifter knobs in volkswagens DON"T unscrew, they have a clip you have to remove, then you can just lift it off. Where did you even get your info from????? i would really like to know. thanks.
Haynes Repair Manual says: For manual tranny just twist the threaded knob off. For Automatic it says remove the 2 screws -- one on each side of the shaft -- on the lower part of the "shift lever grip", then lift off the grip. Good luck, YFC
Most have a retaining clip atached to the back of the knob that can be removed with a screw driver. Here is the instruction: 1:Block the front wheels with wheel chocks for safety. Set the parking brake and move the shift knob all the way down. Turn the ignition off and remove the key. 2:Pull the leather shift cover down to access the small clip at the front of the shift knob (it's not necessary to pull it all the way down--only an inch or two). 3:Grasp the clip with a pair of pliers. Pull it forward to remove it from the shift knob. 4:Grasp the shift knob. Pull it straight up to remove it from the shift assembly.
