This works for 2002 roadster
you need SPECIAL star ended Allen keys. Sorry, cant remember exactly what they are called. Not very expensive (TROX ?).You can remove the glass fronted instrument cluster by using the special headed Allen key to remove the 2 TOP screws which are under the curve of the cluster mount. There are two sunken rings which these screws came out of. If you can GENTLY hook something through these ,the glass instrument cluster can be pulled out of the surround. I also used a CLEAN rubber sink plunger to grip the curved glass & help pull forward. The cluster will slip past the steering wheel if you disengage the wiring loom clips. you have to depress the catch behind the SWIVEL to release it back, then it will pull free.
Inside the instrument cluster. To replace them remove the cluster and take it apart.
Sure, but at some effort. You need to remove the instrument cluster from the dash to replace it.

To reset the trip odometer on a 1996 BMW, locate the trip odometer button on the instrument cluster. Press and hold this button until the trip odometer resets to zero. You may need to do this while the ignition is in the "ON" position, but the engine can be off. Release the button, and the trip odometer should now display zero.
To repair the odometer on an '88 BMW 325is, start by checking the speedometer cable for any damage or disconnection, as a faulty cable can prevent the odometer from functioning. If the cable is intact, remove the instrument cluster to inspect the odometer gears for wear or breakage; you may need to replace them. Additionally, ensure that the connections to the circuit board are secure and free from corrosion. If the issue persists, consider consulting a professional or replacing the entire instrument cluster.
what we do at BMW would be to remove the bulb from the dash cluster in front of the steering wheel.
possible faulty instrument cluster, depending upon year, if your 5 is before 98, a new improved instrument cluster with a software update was made from 98 and on, you may need this new cluster, however have it diagnoised by a dealer first and make sure there are no faults in the trans (egs) control module first..
The instrument cluster will give you a warning, that the vehicle will not start in X amount of miles.
To repair a non-lighting odometer on a 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster, first check the fuse related to the instrument cluster, as a blown fuse can cause the odometer light to fail. If the fuse is intact, you may need to inspect the instrument cluster for loose connections or damaged wiring. In some cases, the odometer's internal bulbs may need replacement; disassemble the cluster to access and replace them. If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider consulting a professional, as the problem could involve a faulty circuit board.
Very aggravating problem with a simple answer thanks to my wife! First, you must have the time showing in the instrument cluster of your dashboard (the digital display in the center of the dash showing the odomoter, temperature, etc.). If the time is not showing in the instrument cluster, then look/feel for a small button labelled 'BC' on the end of the turn signal indicator lever. Push this button to scroll through the options for the instrument cluster and stop when the time is displayed. With the time showing in the instrument cluster, twist and hold the right knob on the instrument cluster until the time starts to change. You can twist it forward or backwards depending on which way you want to set the time. This sets the time in both the instrument cluster and the radio.
you need a factory scanner ,remove the bulb ,much easier
