possible faulty instrument cluster, depending upon year, if your 5 is before 98, a new improved instrument cluster with a software update was made from 98 and on, you may need this new cluster, however have it diagnoised by a dealer first and make sure there are no faults in the trans (egs) control module first..

its up under the driver side dash. remove the bottom panel and it will be there on the right hand side. you just pop the new one in.
My 2002 525i BMW has the same reading on my dash and my car won't even turn over even though the battery and spark plugs are new and the alternator checked out fine. I have no idea what's going on either.
