Only way is to remove the either battery cable for about 10 minutes

Your ECM has deteced a problem with the emissions system. The light can be reset after the problem is repaired. You need an OBD2 scan tool to reset the light.
dont know about the emissions stuff but if your planning to swap engines the ECM will also have to be switched as the 267 ECM will not work on the 305
You can reset the ecm with a scan tool or by unhooking the battery.
Try to find another 97 1500 and swap to see if problem follows the ecm.
just unscrew the battery terminal by 1 minute, or take off the fuse of the block panel for the same time
To reset the ECM remove the battery cable (s) for a few minutes. Replace cable. ECM has been reset.
