In the Volvo S40, the odometer sensor, commonly known as the speed sensor, is typically located on the transmission or gearbox. It is often found on the side of the transmission, near the output shaft or differential. You may need to access it from underneath the vehicle for proper visibility and to disconnect any electrical connectors. Always refer to the specific repair manual for your model year for precise location and instructions.
There isn't really one, it's a touch-free magnetic sensor that pick up from the gearbox.

To repair the speedometer and odometer in a 1991 Volvo 940, first, check the vehicle's speed sensor, which may need cleaning or replacement if faulty. If the speedometer gauge itself is malfunctioning, you may need to remove the instrument cluster and inspect the connections and solder joints for damage. For odometer issues, often the gears inside the odometer mechanism are worn and may require replacement. If you're not comfortable with these repairs, consider consulting a professional mechanic.
Tampering = Felony
There is no cable as in conventional mechanical odometers, instead the odometer in your Volvo is electronic, sensing pulses from a sender located on top of the rear differential.
