The metal concertina pipe at the back of the engine on a Volvo S40 is typically part of the exhaust system. It serves as a flexible connector that accommodates movement and vibrations between the engine and exhaust components, helping to prevent damage and maintain exhaust flow efficiency. This design allows for better alignment during engine operation while minimizing stress on the exhaust system.
No. A concertina is a type of accordion. Even the smallest pipe organs are larger than a concertina.

it is on the back of the intake connected to a metal pipe
It is in a very bad spot at the back passenger side of the engine below/ beside the exhaust manifold. Probably have to get to it from underneath the car, and removing the metal coolant pipe that goes under the engine up to the back. There is 2 8mm? or 10mm bolts that hold the metal pipe on and the thermostat is in there. Good luck!
You use a special round concertina-like plug with a nut on top.
Engine exhaust.
It is called the intake manifold.
Down the back of the engine, roughly in line with the timing belt cover. If you look where the engine joins the gearbox you will see a metal pipe on top with a bleed screw on it, follow that around the back of the engine and it will eventualy join the thermostat housing with 3 little bolts.
Where the engine meets the gearbox there is a large metal water pipe on top with a bleed screw on it, under distributor. Follow that pipe right round the back of the engine and it will join onto the stat housing with 3 little bolts
It is the metal pipe that runs down both sides of the intake manifold. It is the metal pipe that runs down both sides of the intake manifold.
Exactly the same except the Lucerne has the improved metal manifold pipe. I think the 04 and 05 LeSabre also replaced the plastic pipe with metal.
