----WAIT---- is part of a code that comes up when your radio's anti-thief has been activated. and that will happen when the car looses battery power throught battery replacement ect. there is a code 4to 5 numbers long. which should be on a card with the owners manual, about the size of a business card.
Look in the Mercedes manual for your radio section ,and follow those instruction, takes about 2 min to reset

If you've recently interrupted the power supply (battery) then you will need to input the radio code. The code should be in your paperwork, if not, contact your dealer for the code. The "WAIT" code on the radio means you have input the wrong code more than 3 times and you have to wait 10 minutes before attempting to enter radio code.
You need the 5-digit code for the radio. The system locks when power has been disabled or the radio removed from the vehicle. Call a MB dealership. I have the same problem with my '99 SLK230. I know the code too. The book says if power has been interupted and the code has been entered incorrectly more than 3 times, the system will lock itself out. However, the book also says that once the radio is on again it should reset itself in 10 minutes or so. I have let my car run with the radio turned on for more than 30 minutes and it didn't reset so I could enter the code. Now, does anyone know how to fix this?
To reset the radio in a 1984 Mercedes Benz 380 SL, first, locate the radio in the dashboard. Disconnect the car battery by removing the negative terminal to ensure a complete power reset. Wait for a few minutes before reconnecting the battery. Once reconnected, turn on the radio, and it should reset to its default settings.
disconnect the battery cable and wait a few minutes. You must have your code for the radio to work once you hook the battery back up.
If it reads "HOLD" it means the code that unlocks the radio has been entered incorrectly more that 2 times. Simply wait for about 15 minutes after the last improper code input and it should then read "CODE" (the radio must remain on for those 15 minutes). If you don't have the code, any Mercedes dealership will give it to you free. Just call and ask. Be sure to have the VIN number on hand.
its a security feature and you will need the radio code to unlock it.
