Officially called the Volkswagen Automatic Stickshift, this transmission was a three speed manual transmission connected to a vacuum-operated automatic clutch. When the driver put his/her hand on the gearshift the clutch would disengage by a 12 volt solenoid operating the vacuum clutch, allowing shifting between gears, once he/sheremoved his/her hand the clutch would re-engage automatically. The transmission was also equipped with a torque converter, allowing the car to idle in gear, like an automatic. The torque converter was operated by Transmission Fluid. This would allow the car to stop in any gear and start from a standing stop in any gear. This transmission was first available on the 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, and was made available on the Karmann Ghia in 1967. VW dropped the transmission option altogether in 1976.

If by use you mean disengage by depressing the clutch pedal , then it's because it is difficult for the starter to turn over the engine when the car is in gear. Also, it's a safety issue, because if the car is in gear when you start it, it could lurch forward, causing an accident. Either the car must be in neutral or the clutch must be disengaged. Even cars with automatic transmissions won't start unless the gear-select lever is in Park or Neutral. Some cars with automatic transmissions even require the driver's foot to be on the brake for the car to start.

You can if you put it in neutral and push it to get a good enough start and try starting it and if it does then try to put it in drive and go yes and no you can not push start an automatic car. but if you can get it up to about 35 to 40 mph and put it in drive it will work but it is not worth the trouble . I would NOT do this unless you want to take the chance of buying a new transmission. You can not push start todays automatic cars. The engine drives the transmission hydraulic pump, not the driveshaft. Only the early Hydramatic transmissions from the 1940's and 50's you could push start if you got the vehicle up to aprox 25 mph or more.
