While speed is important, flexibility is much more important. However, just because you are fast and/or flexible does not mean that you are physically fit. A much better measure of physical fitness is endurance (not just in running, but also in other forms of exercises/activities) coupled with flexibility. My brother is a great example of this, as he is very flexible and moderately fast, but has absolutely no endurance, and is constantly tired and sleep deprived. Most military and sports team have physical fitness tests, mainly focusing on endurance and strength - not flexibility and speed.
