Yup it does. Forget just loosing weight. It even builds up muscles. I have been jumping rope since when I was 115 kgs. Now I am 79.
In the beginning I could just do about 50–60 in one go. But I used to do about 200. Now I can do 500 or more in one go. When you skip you feel the stress in your fore arms, abs, back. It exercises them all. And of course it's a great calorie burning exercise. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

You cannot lose weight in one area of your body. However, skipping rope is a great weight loss tool and I recommend it.
You can try jumping rope right after your warmup, while you still have the energy to work on a new component of your exercise. If you do several different types of resistance training, then jumping rope between two such exercises can give your muscles, particularly your heart, a different kind of workout between two otherwise similar activities. That will help you lose weight faster.
