That is a question that really don't have a hard and fast answer. There is too many variables involved. What is your age, body structure, have you been exercising, have you been lifting, what work have you been doing.
Since the answer is dependant on each individual its best to determine that yourself which is not hard. Lets say, start with 15 pounds and see how hard it is to do eight curls. If that was so easy you thought you could do 50 then move up to 20 pounds and do another eight. If that started to be a little work then wait a few minutes and do another eight. Ok that's enough for the first time even if you think you could do more. Remember lets not make ourself so sore the first time we don't want to come back.
Wait skip a day let everything rest see if you got sore and come back. This time you will know if you are ready to move up to 25 pounds and repeat the three sets doing ten reps. Again that is enough for the curls work on another body part. Do not overdue it until you see what you feel like after skipping a day and comming back.
You will find the weight that you can do the three sets in the proper method and form and find that you are needing a rest day. Do not try to jump up in weight too fast but rather increase the number of reps up to 20 in the three sets. Some days you may just feel like dropping down in weight. Some times you will need two rest days. Listen to your body. A little soreness is what your are looking for and time in between to build.
There is no reason to prove anything to anyone. Do it right move up and down in weight depending upon what your body is telling you.
