As per my experience, I can say fasting teaches us everything. It has helped me a lot by giving me emotional help. There was a time where i used to stay very depressed. But my fasting coach and his fasting support got me out of that situation.

It can remind us of how the poor people were when they were hungry as well as fasting.
Fasting makes no difference, It's pretty contradictory! Because the Prophet Mohammed lived on his own people's goods, He also mentioned many of times that Money, food and women ate the best things. As you can tell.... he is filthy and Materialistic, so don't bother.

The connection is to help focus yourself. As human beings we are sinful by nature and when we pray we are trying to put aside our flesh, which is what we consider everything about us that is sinful. To add fasting to prayer is even more productive in the sense that we are trying to kill our fleshy desires in a visual way. We are also trying to teach our body discipline and to focus more on what our creator is trying to tell us.
The beattitudes teach us how to be better people of God. It tells us what we can do to please God.
The Bible is an ancient record of the dealings of God with people of Israel. It can teach us what it is God expects of us. It can teach us that God loves us. it can teach us God's plan for our happiness.
Fasting in the month of Ramadan helps with self-restraint. ie. the person fasting has to refrain not only from eating during the day, but also drinking, intercourse, and the person is also meant to refrain from swearing, or committing any bad deeds etc. This is not only practised by afghans, but by all Muslims

A time of fasting is to remember what Christ did for us in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, he made a sacrafice and resisted tempatation for us. If you are a religious person and want to please your Lord then fasting is far from a waste of time. But if you don't want to give up food by fasting, perhaps there is something else you usually do that you don't mind giving up for Lent.
