I've been through this twice, the only real answer is, "It depends." It depends upon how badly you injured yourself, and it depends upon how many times and how badly you re-injure yourself during the healing process. For me, one shoulder took 6 months to heal, the other, which was damaged worse than the first took only 2 months, but I was a lot more careful during that recovery time.
This can vary depending on the severity and possible complications; however, it takes about 8 to 12 weeks from injury to recovery.
Your doctor wants you to use the shoulder very little during recovery, so the sling is recommended. This allows it to heal in the best time. There's no shortcut for Physical therapy and other recommendations if you want the best outcome--full use of your shoulder.

if your recovery time is quicker and your friend then your fitter than him the quicker the recovery time the fitter
it could cause it to be very painful to even move and could cause you to damage the ligaments around your shoulder meaning when you have it put back into place it would have a long recovery time because the ligaments have to pull themselves back I only know this because I dislocated my shoulder from my collar bone about two weeks ago and I have a recovery time of two months
