There are certainly plenty advantages to regular activity (cardiovascular health, self image improvement, sexual health, increase insulin sensitivity, overall energy, injury prevention...just to name a few)
but many problems can arise with sudden and marked increases in training.
if you typically exercise twice a week for 30 minutes and suddenly start running 4 miles a day and lifting 5 times a week for 2 hours a time - your body is not going to be able to adapt at a fast enough rate and bad things can happen.
this is called overtraining and can cause long term problems.
muscle fatigue and injury, metabolic problems with hormone levels, and eventually cognitive problems (thinking clearly). genetics can play a role in how much is too much but nutrition and varying muscle groups is nearly as important. when you exercise you burn energy - energy that you body needs to repair, rebuild and retain normal functions and tissues. so a balance of carbs, proteins and fats is essential.
all this can be caused by sudden and dramatic increases in activity, poor technique, poor nutrition, poor exercise program, not enough rest/sleep, not enough fluid intake, or past medical problems (COPD, CHF, Addisons, Prior injuries, Asthma....)
It's not unless you do things too strenuous. Exercise is encouraged.
