Yoga was developed in the time when the world was still developing. Yoga originated in Ancient India. It was created by a Hindu Saint. In fact, He had mastered yoga so powerfully, he could change his body temperature in the harshest of conditions!

Who was the inventor of Yoga?

There is no single inventor of yoga. History of yoga is complex and stretches over almost a thousand of years. First, Patanjali codified philosophy if yoga in his Yoga Sutras. In Yoga Sutras, yoga was entirely about training the mind. Then, Tantra got mixed in. This is where bodily practices were introduced into yoga. In 13th century, one guy named Gorakhnath invented hatha yoga for ascetics like himself to torture (read train) the mind through various painful practices applied to body. In the early 19th century, a Swedish physiologist Karl Ling invented Swedish gymnastics based on hatha yoga practices and kung fu movements. In the late 19th century, a number of British bodybuilders introduced british gymnastics - entirely based on Swedish gymnastics - to Indian crowd. The Indian crowd lead by Swami Vivekananda took it and called the new yoga and used the new yoga movement to fight against the British. In the 1920s, a Mysore maharaj Krishnarajendra Vadyar IV ordered a young talented monk Krishnamacharya to invent the all-inclusive technique of yoga. In 1932, Krishnamacharya introduced his invention to the king and got permission to train king's sons. The king's sons weren't particularly interested in yoga. So, Krishnamacharya started experimenting on his relative Iyengar, who was a creeple. Over a few years, the yoga therpay proved successful and made Iyengar feel better. Iyengar got so fanatic over yoga that he developed his own therapeutic approach to yoga and called it Iyengar yoga which is now the base of all the modern yoga.

Who invented the yoga mat?

American businesses who wanted to sell you something. In reality, yoga was supposed to be practised on a tiger skin (so that insects would not crawl around) or on kusa grass. Why a kusa mat is so special I do not know. But kusa is still used in all temple offerings in India. No Pepsi Cola is accepted as an offering, for some reason.

What is a yoga mantra?

What is yoga? Yoga is living in union with the Divine. ‘In union’ means ever connected, not as a body and mind, but as the Divine Soul. Therefore yoga is consciousness, consciousness of being the observer, the witness of the mind. What is a yoga mantra? Any mantra that can help us to transcend the body, mind and ego can be a yoga mantra. A true Yogi, if he is doing yoga, lives in the cycle of Karma Yoga - Action, Bhakti Yoga - Devotion, Gyana Yoga - Education, Dhyana Yoga - Meditation. A true Yogi is in constant yoga, and whatever yoga mantra he uses, it hardly matters, provided he is in yoga or union.
