Most trainers and experts will tell you that you need to work out between three and five days a week. While that may be true, from a strictly academic point of view, there is an issue for many of us, which limits that. The issue is, of course, time. It seems like we don’t have enough hours in the day to do all of the things that we want to. If you have a full time job (or multiple jobs) family life and other issues to contend with then you may find that the only times you have to devote to yourself are the weekends. Does that mean you should make no effort and accept that your life cannot change until you have more free time?

I think we both know that is not the right way to think. That is quitter language, and if you want to make real changes to your life then you are going to have to work them around your life as it is now. If you wait for later, then later may not come at all. So lets talk about how to make the most of those precious weekend hours you have to work out.

Plan Your Time

When it comes to the weekend planning your time is essential. If you don’t make good plans you can end up with your time being taken away by less important activities. So make sure you set up a time that is just for your workouts each weekend and you will be able to commit to yourself without letting it get too much in the way of your fun.

Supplement with Longer Workouts

Don’t push yourself to the point of damage, or until you feel uncomfortable, but do make sure that you are adding where you can. An extra 10 or 15 minutes spent in your calories burning zone each day of the weekend can add significantly to your count of calories burned over a year.

Double up Exercise with Other Activities Exercise and family time do not have to be opposites. Consider taking the out for a hike in nicer weather, or a game of Basketball. You won’t only be looking after your own health by creating healthy habits for the whole of your life. Watching Out for Muscle Damage Just be sure that you’re not going to give yourself muscle damage by trying to push yourself too far, too fast. You need to be sure that you are working on things at an appropriate level for your current fitness. Don’t try to make up for lost time by adding more weight or running faster. There you have it. Of course as your life gets simpler, or you find more time, you will want to engage in exercise more often. For the time being however there is no reason why you should not get out there and get the exercise that you can get done started. Some exercise is much better than no exercise.
