You don't have to buy equipment to be able to undertake strength training exercises at home. Push-ups, crunches and squats require no equipment. For professional advice you can ask at your local gym.
A great exercise to tone up your abs is doing crunches. You can do this by lying on your back, crossing your legs in the air, and lifting your head and shoulders off the ground. You should be able to feel the muscles working in your abdomen.

If you have the right form, crunches are the best way to go. Machines aren't worth the money you pay, neither are the results. If you're financially able, seek out a trainer for a month, focus on form and getting the most out of each exercise they teach, then you'll be able to take it from there on your own.
