Crying is a normal and natural function of humans, male and female.
If you are with him, and you are both comfortable with physical contact, sitting next to him, holding his hand, stroking his back or hugging him work well. Do not tell him everything will "be all right" unless you know it will, and do not tell him to "stop" or "suck it up" or anything else that will add to his distress.
If he is on the phone, make reassuring noises and try to arrange to see him in person to offer your support. When he can and is ready to talk, be there to listen, don't offer advise unless he asks, mostly be a good friend.
