depends on the dog. some dogs are Territorial and may take the new pet as a threat and perhaps lash out at it (aggressive dogs are known for this, espically male dogs). While other dogs will try and nuture and care the new pet until it reaches a mature stage.
The simple answer is you keep them separated when you are not there. Introduce them when you are and teach the dog to accept the puppy.
