George wants to give Lennie a pup so it attracts his attenion to something else, George thinks by doing this it will keep Lennie out of trouble. Also because George thinks a pup is bigger than a mouse so Lennie couldnt kill it easily.
Curley's wife unintentionally provokes Lennie by letting him stroke her hair too roughly, leading him to accidentally kill her in a moment of panic.
He didn't try to kill them, but when he killed the puppy it was because it "looked like it was going to bite him, so he smacked it" He killed Curley's wife because he was petting her hair and she freaked out, so he shook her, breaking her neck in the process.
Lennie only kills one puppy-the puppy that he received from Slim. He killed the puppy because, "I was jus' playin' with him...an' he made like he's gonna bite me...an' I made like I was gonna smack him...an'...an' I done it. An' then he was dead." (Steinbeck 87) Remember all those mice that Lennie killed in the past? It was the same thing here. The mice (or the puppy in this case) acted mean, if you will, so Lennie played back, but he didn't know is own strength. He also kills Curley's wife in the same way. She made him angry, and he was just trying to make her be quiet. (He shook her until her neck broke.) Lennie only killed 1 puppy; his own, which makes it all the more sad.
George. After Lennie accidentally killed Curleys wife and went to hide in the brush (a place where George and Lennie agreed to meet in case of trouble) Curley and the guys set out to kill Lennie for what he did. George, not wanting Lennie to die like that, told Lennie the story of the house they planned on having. while telling Lennie he shot him in the back of the head.
The puppy dies from being mishandled by Lennie; in the same way that Lennie kills the mice and the girl.(On the above) Lennie doesn't kill the girl, just mistakes her dress as a furry animal because he has a mental disability. The girl looks at this for rape, but before Lennie can be tried for sexual misconduct, him a nd George run away from the town of Weed into the countryside.

Lennie, who does not know his own strength, becomes scared and tries to quiet her but ends up causing her death. His actions are unintentional and driven by his inability to control his strength and emotional reactions.
Lennie was obsessed with soft objects. Curley's wife allowed Lennie to touch her hair and couldn't stop. Lennie was so strong he broke her neck.

A mother dog will stay close to the puppy out of instinct to keep it warm. If she accidentally lies down on the puppy or rolls on it, it could kill it. Also, if she is not with them for an extended period of time and they catch a chill, they will die.
