Where in the aquarium do glow fish sleep?

The term GloFish is actually a trademarked brand for genetically modified zebrafish. Zebrafish are found in the rivers of India and Bangladesh and are primarily tropical fish. They have long been sold in the U.S. ornamental fish market.

Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and colleagues at the National University of Singapore (NUS) first developed a glowing fish by extracting green fluorescent protein (GFP) from a jellyfish and inserting it into the zebrafish embryo. Their goal was to produce a fish that would be able to detect pollutants in the water by fluorescing in response to various environmental toxins. The NUS team developed a red fluorescent fish by adding a gene from sea coral, then a yellow-orange fluorescent fish by adding a variant of the original jellyfish gene. A later team from the National University of Taiwan developed a fluorescent green rice fish, known as the medaka.

Later, the scientists from NUS met with Yorktown Technologies giving the company the world-wide rights to market the the GloFish. The company introduce the GloFish to the U.S. market in 2003 after two years of extensive environmental research and consultation.

Glow fish are only Zebra Danios that have had a jellyfish gene added biologically. They will usually go down to the substrate to rest but sometimes they will rest amongst the surface plants.
