No, not quite. It is only unhygienic if the hamster has not been cleaned, but dont worry. I never got sick from touching mine, and mine never bites. Just to be safe, if you get sick/ a weird feeling after touching your pet, send your pet to the vet, and if you do not get better, then you should see your local pharmacist or pet vendor.
