Fennel is not the same as anise, but they and some other plants have a smell or taste in common. Another plant that also has a similar flavour is dill.

Hmmmm, I don't EVER remember having either the taste of fennel or anise (both sort of licorice) in my rye bread or dill pickles as a child reared by a German mother.

While the leafy structure of the fennel plant looks similar in appearance to the leaves of the dill plant, the flavor is absolutely no where near each other. The botanical name for dill is Apiaceae anethum graviolens.

Dill, fennel and anise are different plants from the same family but that is where it ends. Fennel is an edible bulb with seeds that can and are used as a spice as well as eating the bulb as a vegetable. Its botanical name is Apiaceae Foeniculum vulgare.

Anise is a different plant from a different genus and species and the seeds are used but the plant is generally not eaten. Anise is from Apiaceae Pimpinella anisum which is an entirely different plant.
