Some bread recipes call for a little fat to make the bread richer (some use a lot - like brioche). You can use margarine, butter, lard, olive oil, or any other fat you like. Some breads need the firm fat like butter, especially when a lot is used in the recipe.

Well, it can be. It depends on the bread. It helps so much if you make it homemade and use butter instead of margarine. Also, DON'T use bleached flour.
Butter vs Margarine. Butter wins all the time. However,if something says to use butter,you can substitute it with margarine. It won't taste exactly the same..it'll only be a little different. So,anytime it says butter you can use either :)
