The Toll House Chocolate cookie, a chocolate chip cookie was invented at the Toll House Inn, which was located Whitman, Massachusetts, some 30 miles from Boston. The restaurant was owned by Ruth Graves Wakefield in the 1930's.
It is said that Wakefield was making chocolate cookies and upon running out of regular bakers chocolate substituted Semi-Sweet Chocolate pieces from Nestle' thinking it would melt and mix into the batter, it did not and the chocolate chip cookie was born.
Wakefield sold the recipe to Nestle' in exchange for a life time supply of Chocolate Chips. Every bag of Nestle' chocolate chips sold in North America has a variation of her original recipe printed on the back.
