I just cooked a cooks shank ham last night and it was gross. It's just about all fat with lots of tendon layers. Ive heard that the butt is fatty too. I will never make a shank again. Use spiral ham or a whole boneless ham for casseroles. If you cook the whole boneless ham for about 3 hours at 325, it will give your casseroles a better flavor and it wont be as chewy.
Butt ham comes from the upper part of the pig's hind leg, while shank ham comes from the lower part of the leg. Butt ham is typically larger, meatier, and more marbled, making it ideal for roasting or smoking, whereas shank ham has a more pronounced bone and is often leaner, lending itself well to soups and stews. Both types can be cured or smoked for added flavor, but their textures and uses in cooking can differ significantly.
There is a part called the Shoulder Butt where you would get: bone-in blade roast, blade roast, blade steak, ground pork and sausage. If you are asking about the butt, the leg of the hog, then the Ham section can provide these cuts: bone-in fresh ham, smoked ham, leg cutlets, boneless ham roast; also butt roast and ground meat (for hot dogs and kielbasa). The Ham (leg section) includes the butt end near the tail and the shank end near the leg.Charts can be found here: http:/www.virtualweberbullet.com/meatcharts.html
Ready to cook means that the ham has already been partially cooked, but still needs to cook before eating. If a ham shank is "Ready to Eat" this means that the ham is fully cooked and can be eaten right out of the package.
i do not know i am trying to find out if you can use butt ham for a boiled dinner
HAM COMES FROM A COW'S BUTT! HAM GOES MOO!
To cook a ham shank, you typically need enough water to cover the meat. Generally, this means adding about 4 to 6 cups of water, depending on the size of the shank and the pot. The water should be at least an inch above the shank to ensure even cooking. Adjust as necessary based on the specific recipe and your pot size.
how long to cook a fully cooked ham shank portion..cover or uncovered?
Ham shanks should be good for 4 to 5 days refrigerated, maybe a little longer.

Fish is better about ham than turkey.
A shank ham comes from the lower leg portion of the pig, typically resulting in a cut that is more tender and has a higher fat content, often smoked or cured for flavor. In contrast, a picnic shoulder is cut from the front leg of the pig, generally containing more connective tissue and muscle, making it ideal for slow cooking methods. While both cuts can be used in similar ways, the shank ham is usually more suitable for baking or glazing, while the picnic shoulder is often used for pulled pork or braising.
Put the shank into a large saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil, turn heat down so water is simmering, skim of any scum from the surface, simmer for about 2 hours, top up water to make sure it always covers the shank. Leave the shank in the water to cool.
