To pick a ripe cantaloupe, look for one that is heavy for its size, has a sweet smell at the stem end, and has a slightly soft feel when gently pressed.
You wait until they're ripe and press the A button when you're in front of them. If you can't tell when it's ripe, then press A anyway and on a day it is ripe you'll pick it. It's not that hard, really.
To pick a ripe plantain for cooking, look for one that is mostly yellow with some black spots. The skin should be firm but yield slightly to pressure. Avoid green plantains, as they are not yet ripe.
