French fries are not an invention of the United States or even France. They are a staple of the Belgium diet since the 1860's. Potatoes are thick cut, double fried in very hot oil, served in a paper cone, with mayonnaise and horseradish for dipping. Soldiers deployed to Europe during World War I ate the pomme frites and brought their taste for them back home to the United States. Even though most Americans attribute French fries to France, not even the French take credit for the tasty potato creation. But the popularity of them didn't explode until after World War II. The thin French fries that we know today and are served at most fast food restaurants didn't appear until the 1950's.
Belgium
No, they're Belgium. Pommes frites (which is the french name for french fries) were certainly invented by the Belgians over 300 years ago. That doesn't prevent them from being very much a part of French culture. Hamburgers, french fries and apple pie were all invented in Europe, but they are all as American as . . . apple pie.
