Biography

Alfred L Carlle was born on September 4 1888 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Alfred went to a school near his home, and he worked with his father in the carpentry business when he was a young man. Once he got older he continued working with his father in the carpentry business, then after several years, he started to enjoy learning about mechanics. Alfred loved learning about mechanics so much the he decided he wanted to learn more. He got advance courses in the school that he attended which was called Wayland Seminary in Washington. That was one of a bunch of schools that helped African Americans at the end of the civil war.

Then once his classes were over, he moved to Pittsburg Pennsylvania. There he got a job as a low paid porter; porters are people who carry luggage for other people to airplane stations or to the train. He was a porter for a company called Markell Brothers a local drug store, and he was a porter at St Charlies Hotel. While he spent, long hours in the drug store he realized that many people enjoyed eating ice cream. He also notice how hard it was to get the ice cram and to transfer it into a bowl, the person would always had to struggle to scoop the ice cream from the carton with a small spoon, and the ice cream always got stuck to the spoon. Usually the person serving the ice cream had to use both hand to scoop the ice cream and transfer it to the bowl. He also thought it was nasty especially if the person serving the ice cream had dirty hands.

Therefore, one day he decided he was going to invent something to make serving ice cream fast and make it easier. Therefore, he went to his room and stayed there for hours and hours a day. Then one day he thought of an idea. He invented a mechanical device that kept the ice cream from sticking to the spoon. It looks like a wooden stick and on the top, it look like a small cone made out of metal. Then he showed he showed this new invention to the Markell Brothers or the drug store, the man did not believe Alfred's invention would work. So then, Alfred bought an ice cream carton and he also bough a small bowl. Then he put the bowl and ice cream on the counter, and then Alfred got his invention and used it. It was working perfectly fine, and then the man in the store was amazed. So then, he got a patent on February 2, 1897 for his invention. He kept on making more of these ice cream scoopers a day. His invention was durable, strong, cheap and easy to make and lastly it made ice cream lovers life a whole lot easier
