Sailors in submarines during World War 2 had similar cravings, but for foods that were fresh and could not be taken on a submarine patrol.

When a submarine would get back from a patrol (a couple of months), they would find boxes of apples and Oranges waiting for them. Sometimes there would be a couple of boxes of cabbages. The sailors would wolf down all they could of these foods that their kind commander ordered someone to place on the dock. The sailors had not been getting the minerals and nutrients in those foods.
