The House of the Scorpion (2002) is a Science Fiction novel by Nancy Farmer about a young clone who is being raised to provide spare organs for the powerful drug lord

Plot summary

The story takes place in Opium, a strip of land between Mexico (now called Aztlán), and the United States created as a result of the Mexican Drug War. Opium, which is essentially an opium-producing estate, is ruled by Matteo Alacrán, also known as El Patrón. El Patrón's work-force consists of illegal immigrants whom the Farm Patrol (ex-criminals who are tempted with the offer of protection from the police) enslave when they find them crossing the border in either direction. These illegal immigrants become "eejits", mindless zombie slaves, after the Farm Patrol inserts computer chips into their brains.

The main character, Matt, is a clone of El Patrón, who intends to harvest Matt's organs when his own organs fail. Matt is treated cruelly by most of the Alacráns, is forbidden to leave the estate, and is kept ignorant that he is a clone until a cruel joke reveals his status. Matt is given a bodyguard, Tam Lin, who becomes a father figure to him.

After a near-fatal heart attack, El Patrón requires a transplant from Matt, but is foiled by Celia, the household cook and Matt's caregiver. El Patrón dies, leaving Matt still alive and no longer of any use to the Alacráns. Matt tries to escape the mansion in the ensuing chaos with the help of María, a young member of the Mendoza family, but the plan fails and María is taken away. Tam Lin pretends to betray Matt, but instead sets him on a path to Aztlán.

Matt is at first an outcast because the other boys think he is a spoiled aristocrat. However, Matt becomes a hero when he defies the Keepers and leads the boys in a rebellion against them after surviving the "bone yard". After liberating the Lost Boys, Matt manages to find María and her mother, the politically powerful Esperanza. From Esperanza, Matt learns that Opium is in lock down. No one can enter or leave the country. Only El Patrón's DNA (which is identical to Matt's) can deactivate the border security. Matt manages to re-enter Opium, but only to learn that almost no one he knew is still alive. El Patrón viewed his family as his possessions, and arranged for them to die with him.

Esperanza, María's mother, tells Matt that because he is a clone of the dead El Patrón, he has inherited Opium and is the new El Patrón. She offers Matt her support, as well as the aid of both the United States and Aztlán, provided that he promises to destroy Opium from within. Matt agrees, and returns to Opium, planning to shut down the drug empire and turn the eejits back into normal humans.

This book is awesome! It is about a clone named Matt. He is the clone of El Patron, a 146 year old ruler of Oppium. El Patron's family hates Matt, but El patron loves him (only because he wants to use him for something.) Matt only has three friends: Celia, Maria, and Tam Lin. Well, once Matt finds out what El Patron wants to use him for, he knows he must escape. His friends help him go to Atlzan, where he meets three boys. They must all escape from Atlzan because the Keepers are after them. This book has a really good (and happy) ending. I hope you read it!

Matt decides he is going to take down Opium with the help of Maria's mom and his friends. There will be a sequel. That's what Nancy Farmer said.
