Frodo knew this ever since his talk with Gandalf at Bag End. Gandalf told Frodo of Gollum's history, and the sad fate of what happened to Sméagol and Déagol.

How does Gollum react when he couldn't find the ring in 'The Hobbit'?

Not very well, considering that he turns around and rushes back to Bilbo with the intent to brutally murder him.He becomes very mad, furious even, and suddenly very suspicious of Bilbo and what he's got in his pocketses. I might even dare to insinuate that Gollum was perhaps a bit frightened at the realization that he had lost his Ring after all of the years he'd had possession of it.

Bilbo finds himself in a cave after escaping the goblins. The cave is home to a creature who calls himself gollum. Gollum is in a mood because he has lost his precious(the ring in bilbo's pocket). Gollum challenges Bilbo to a riddles contest, if Bilbo loses Gollum gets to stew him in a pot and eat him. If Bilbo wins he gets to leave the cave uneaten. In 'The Hobbit' how is Bilbo different from other hobbits?

Gollum was first known as smeagul but once he found the ring and killed his brother he was then known as Gollum (he got this name when the ring took controlled of him and he started making the chocking noise sounding like the word Gollum). He had the one ring for hundreds of years giving him unnatural long life. He became fixed on the ring and would kill anyone who would take it like he tried to do to Bilbo once he noticed he had lost it. Gollum would not give the ring up easily and tried to take it from Frodo in The Lord Of The Rings. Bilbo had it for much shorter time, so part of his own mind was still in control and was not as obbsessed with the ring as Gollum, and was able to find the will to give it up and pass it on to his adopted heir, Frodo Baggins.
