You first have to put the PokeWalker in your pocket or on the clip and clip it to your clothing. Then, you must go outside and exercise (including walking) until you get to 5000 steps. Shaking the PokeWalker is ineffective, and produces very low results. There is no other way to get to that amount without actually walking.
5000 Steps means that you have to have walked 5000 steps that day, not total
You can only get it from the PokeWalker (Beautiful Beach with 5000+ steps or Blue Lake with 3500+ steps).
There are some pretty cool ways of gaining steps on your Pokewalker. 1. Attach it to your dogs collar. Have you dog run around. 2. Shake it in a steady rhythm while watching TV. 3. If your driving in a car, attach it to you seat belt. The movement of the car will shake the Pokewalker. (I have tried all of these and they do work!!)
Yes, there's a certain combo (pokemon+rout) needed, though.
You unscrew the original back of the pokewalker OFF of the pokewalker, then replace it with the back with the clip.

30% chance of fighting one if you've gone 5000 plus only on Blue Lake
For any of the pokewalker routes, as long as the count displayed is over that many steps then you have a chance of catching that pokemon. You don't have to have taken all of those steps on that route. It is just based off what the display says at the time you go searching.
no. each trip to the pokewalker is one level up.
The Watts on a pokewalker are the "cash" for the pokewalker every 20 steps is about one watt every time you meet a certain amount of watts you unlock a new area for the pokewalker
