Not an easy question, as movies can still make money long after they are removed from their normal runs in theatres, through TV sales, video disks and things like sequel rights, merchandising and other intellectual property.

Godzilla, in the course of its normal run, made almost $508 million - not that good, for a film that cost $160 million to make. (Profit of $348M, or 2.2 times the cost) Compare this to the LEGO Movie, that cost $60M to make and brought in $469M worldwide, profit $409M or 6.8 times the cost.
