No. District 9 and Independence Day are not related.
District 9 is about these cockroach-looking aliens (which i know sounds gross, but they look really cool) that non intentionally landed on Earth and have been stranded there for 28 yrs. Then MNU, a gov't agency that takes care of relations with the Prawns - name for alien species on Earth. A man, named Wikus goes into District 9 with several others MNU people to evict the aliens into District 10. He finds this cylinder thing filled with a black liquid. He sprays it on his face by accident and gets "sick" from it. Slowly, Wikus is changing into a Prawn as well. Btw, he confiscated that from another Prawn called Christoper Johnson. So now, he goes to hospital and under a cast he has (he broke his arm while in District 9) a total alien hand is there. Doctors secretly want to extract everything from him because, with his alien hand, he can use alien weapons (that work only with alien DNA). He escapes and finds Christoper again in District ( (he's now a fugitive on the run and went to hide there). Together Wikus and Christoper try to get the liquid back from MNU and use it (becuase that liquid is a "fuel-like" thing that'll power the Mothership of the aliens. They get back the fuel after breaking into MNU facility and escaing n a stolen MNU jeep. They, after a series of events, get the Mothership working. And the reason Wikus had agreed to help Christoper is because Christoper said he could fix him and turn him human again. Wikus stays behind, tough, to delay the MNU guys that are trying to get Wikus into custody. Then at the very end of the movie, right before the credits, you see a greenish Prawn making a metal rose out of scrap metal. We're guessing it's Wikus finally transformed into a Prawn making a rose for his wife, who he of course had to leave behind as an alien hybrid... thing. :) Sources: District 9 movie, Internet, District 9 trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC2V9IFUQNE&feature=fvst; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BjWEn5yvmw
