This question has been discussed in several WW2 Forums and the concensus is No, he was not the same German. Reasons to think he was the same man is due to the fact that they look the same and have the same short hair cut and the American translator shoots him at the end of the last battle. However, many German soldiers had short hair cut and would have looked the same. I think one movie fan noticed a difference of uniform between the German PW and the German who had the knife fight. Also, you will notice that the German PW was beaten before he was blind-folded and was bleeding from at least 2 places on his head. The 2nd German was not bleeding except from the hand-to-hand fight, which left a bloody ear. I think the reason he was shot at the end was because this was the German who shot Capt. Miller. Answer is No.
No it is not the same guy, the prisoner they let go is a regular soldier, he is the one at the bridge that shots the captain and then gets killed by the American that jumps up behind them, but the guy that stabs the Jewish American soldier is an SS soldier, and if you look at pictures from the two you will tell right away it isn't the same guy.
No but he is the one who shoots captain John miller And proceeds to get shot by corporal uppham
Orlando Bloom does not have a role in the 1998 American war film 'Saving Private Ryan'.
Matt Damon plays Private James Ryan.
No. Hank's character, Captain John H. Miller, died at the end. His eyes remained open, but one of his soldiers looked down to see his hand had stopped trembling. The soldier reached into Miller's (Hanks') pocket to take his papers for safe keeping.

A German soldier after an intense knife fight.
In the movie, Saving Private Ryan, there was NO German soldier with a dog. However, there is a reference to Dog Green Sector of Omaha Beach which is where the landing scene of the film "Saving Private Ryan" was set. There was also a scene when Miller's men are sorting American GI "dog tags". But no dog (animal).
Hands up, hands up, drop your weapons, Shut up( to german soldier)
Captain Miller made a wise decision by letting the German soldier go because this avoided revenge attacks from the other side.
The name of the German-to-English translator in Saving Private Ryan was Corporal Upham, played by actor Jeremy Davies.
FUBAH
At the end of Saving Private Ryan, when Upham captures him? He says "I know this soldier! I know this man!" To which Upham says the rude German phrase "halt die Schnauze!" which basically translates to "shut your trap!" The German says Upham's name, at which point Upham shoots him. He then tells the other Germans to "verschwindet", which means "disappear" or "vanish".
