No. He was not. Two works of note that address Hemingway's Catholicism seem to suggest that he took his Roman Catholic faith more seriously than modern critics and biographers suggest. The authors are H.R. Stoneback and Matthew Nickel. A quick Google of their name and Hemingway will give you a jumping point for any research. They both provide clear evidence that refutes the "conversion of convenience" theory that he converted just for the sake of this marriage. That said, no one would suggest, not even Hemingway, that he was a good example of a good catholic. As a devout catholic myself, I would hardly consider myself a good example either, but this does not diminish my faith or my identity as a catholic. In addition to the authors noted above, there are numerous articles online discussing Hemingway's faith that are worth reading.
