James I (1566 - 1625) was the great, great grandson of King Henry VII (1457 - 1509), the first Tudor monarch and father of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547). This line of descent was through Margaret Tudor (1489 - 1541), oldest daughter of Henry VII, who married James IV of Scotland. In fact, both parents of James I, were descended from Margaret Tudor. His mother being the ill-fated Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587), and his equally ill-fated father, Lord Henry Darnley (1545 - 1567).

Was Mary I related to James I?

Yes, they were both descendants of King Henry VII of England. Mary I was the daughter of King Henry VIII, son of Henry VII, and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII (and, therefore sister of Henry VIII), married King James IV of Scotland. The son of James IV and Margaret became King James V of Scotland. James V was the father of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son became first James VI of Scotland and then James I of England.
