The main difference is that film is a visual media, where important plot points must be shown, whereas a book relies entirely on the telling. Some things cannot be shown, only told. The difference between the book and the movie is that one is a book, and one is a movie, and both play to the strengths and work within the confines of their respective media.
The movie is based on the book and so is quite similar. Of course there were some changes as not everything translates to the screen and due to time constraints. The characters, settings and plot are all the same.
Some differences are:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is actually the British name for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone, which is the first book. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book, and it doesn't have a different British name.
The book and movie are very close, the movie of course has some small changes but is generally considered very faithful to the book.
The characters are the same names, and for the most part are the same age as their book counterparts. They all look very close to how they were described.
The plot and most of the scenes are the same.
Both are half-blood wizards who never knew their parents. They can also both speak Parseltongue, but this is because Harry is one of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes.
However, both of Harry's parents were magical and both of them were deceased unlike Voldemort's. Only his mother was magical and dead, his father was a muggle who was still alive until Voldemort killed him.
They also have different ideologies, resulting in them fighting each other.
The book has more parts than the movie. Because the movie has bits picked out from the book.
