John Marshall served as the 4th Chief Justice of the U.S. from 1801 to his death in 1835. Marshall also served as the Secretary of State under President John Adams. He was also a Federalist (Hamilton's Party) from Virginia.

Marshall is credited with authoring many landmark Supreme Court decisions that strengthened the power of the Judicial Branch and the Federal government as a whole. He is arguably considered the most influential Supreme Court justice in history.
