Queen Elizabeth was Queen of England and Ireland from the 17th of November, 1558 until her death on the 24th of March, 1603. She was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. She was also known as The Virgin Queen or Good Queen Bess. She was the daughter of Henry VII and Anne Boleyn. Queen Elizabeth had been born a princess, but because her mother, Anne Boleyn, had been executed three years after her birth on accont of adultery and incest, she was put aside and declared illegitimate by her father for her brother, Edward VI, the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. Edward was only ten years old when he became king, so the kingdom was ruled by a Regency Council, and died five years later of tuberculosis. Queen Elizabeth was cut out of her brother's will, but the will was set aside and her half sister, Mary I, succeeded him briefly. Queen Mary I is also known as Bloody Mary during her reign, due to the fact that she tried to change the country's entire religion to Catholic after her mother's religion, and ended up having to put a lot of people to death because they rose up against her. Queen Mary I is the first daughter of Henry VIII and of his first wife, the Princess of Spain, Catherine of Aragorn. She was supported well by her uncle and relatives in Spain. After her death, and because Mary had not produced any heirs, the throne passed to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was left to clean up the mess that her sister had left her. She ruled for the good of the people, and a lot of people supported her, mostly because she didn't try to change the country's religion and that she set out to rule by good counsel, meaning, all of her decisions were passed through a group of advisors first, to see what they thought, before actually taking place. Elizabeth became famous for the fact that she was the Virgin Queen, the queen that never took a husband or had any children. One of her first moves as queen was to support the establishment of an English Protestant Church, of which she became Supreme Governor. This church later became the well known Church of England. Elizabeth never married or had any children and no one still knows why, though this was very much debated. It was rumored that she might have taken a lover that would not have been approved by her counsel. But either way, as Elizabeth grew older, this was what she became famous for. Her rule was famous and was called the Elizabethian era, famous above all for the new flair for English drama, led by playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. All in all, in response to the question, Queen Elizabeth I was famous for establishing the Church of England, being one of the first monarchs to rule for the good of the people, rather than on her own whim and will, starting a new era (named after her in her honor) of English drama, and being the Virgin Queen, the queen that never married.
