Well it all really started out just as stories he told his son (who has ADD and Dyslexia) and the stories were in a way about his son.
The Percy Jackson series is fictional, based on some Greek mythology, legends, and myths. Rick Riordan didn't hear the stories from somewhere else then put it into writing - he started with a few ideas and eventually turned them into books and then a best selling series. He's making a sequel series, the Heroes of Olympus.
I don't think Rick Riordan believes in Greek Mythology, but he does know a lot about it
he was in 8th grade. so probably 13 to 14
Rick's books started off as bedtime stories for his son who had dyslexia and ADHD, then he started to write them up and they became popular novels.

His young son actually. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief started as a bedtime story for his son. His son loved it and encouraged his father to write it down. Riordan then read it to his classroom, they also loved it. Riordan wanted to write a story that was both interesting and educational as well.
