Chief Logan's family was killed by a group of settlers led by Daniel Greathouse as part of the events leading up to Lord Dunmore's War in 1774. The incident, known as the Yellow Creek Massacre, was a violent retaliation against a group of Native Americans, including members of Logan's family. Chief Logan then sought revenge against the settlers, leading to further conflict.
The American Indian leader who came to be called Logan was born in Pennsylvania circa 1725. His father was a Cayuga Indian named Shikellamy. Shikellamy later renamed his son after James Logan -- a prominent Pennsylvanian and old friend. Logan grew up in Pennsylvania and came to view many whites as his friends. Chief among them was David Zeisberger, a missionary of the Moravian Church. Logan eventually married a Shawnee woman and moved to Ohio circa 1770.
Joe or Joesph Brant was an Iroquois chief work fought with the British in the Revolutionary war.
Logan is the correct spelling.
Chief Logan, a leader of the Mingo tribe, attacked settlers in the Ohio River Valley primarily in response to escalating tensions and violence between Native Americans and European settlers. The murder of his family members by settlers fueled his anger and desire for revenge. Additionally, the encroachment of settlers on Native lands threatened the Mingo's way of life, leading to a broader conflict over territory and resources. Logan's actions were part of a larger pattern of resistance against settler expansion during this tumultuous period.
