Anne Boleyn (c1501-07 - 1536) the second wife of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) gave birth to a daughter (later Elizabeth I) in 1533, although Henry was disappointed, as he desperately wanted a male heir. However, he was confident, at that time, that Anne would eventually give him a son. Over the next two years Anne had two late miscarriages/stillbirths, and Henry began to tire of her. Eventually Anne, who had many jealous and powerful enemies at court, was accused on some trumped-up charges of witchcraft, incest and adultery - all treasonable offences. She was found guilty and executed at the Tower of London on 19 May 1536, beheaded by an expert French swordsman. Her daughter, Elizabeth, was nearly 3 years old. Henry was betrothed to Jane Seymour the next day.
