All regular movies with some exceptions ( Kiddy Cartoons were always in painted color) were Black and white up to and thru World War II- with some technicolor films coming out in the Early thirties such as Elizabeth and Essex and Queen Christina. Some say technicolor came out in l928, but after sound was perfected. Color Photography, as distiinct from retouched or colored-over Black and white films- best suitable for large formats- greater margin of error- dates to about l906 and it was discovered in Czarist Russia as a side-effect of the discovery of Chromatography ( lit, Color-graphics) by the Russian botanist Tswett, the different colors seek their own level- a scientific rough diamond- cut and polished into what we now know as Color Photography in less than a year from the discovery of the principle it was based on, very progressive. Early Russian color photos were tri-pack and required special lenses and filters.
