King Philip II of Spain was a catholic, as was all Spain; Queen Elizabeth I was a protestant, as was most of England and to Philips' eyes they were heretics. Philip had the blessing of the pope for the invasion of England to spread catholicism.
Perhaps Elizabeth I thought that England needed a powerful female monarch. Perhaps she did not want to lose power to a man, which she would have done (in that era) had she married. The country was left in a lot of debt and was having problems with religion as the previous monarch (Bloody Mary) decided that Catholicism would be the only religion in England. Elizabeth brought the country out of debt, did not require people to be Catholic, won the battle against the Spanish Armada, organised the ships that voyaged off to find new land and played a large part in making England one of the most powerful countries in the world.

For one, Elizabeth I was Anglican, following in the footsteps of her father, Henry VIII, who broke off the Church of England from the Vatican. For another, there was a backlash against Catholicism because of the rather violent reign of Elizabeth's sister, the Catholic Mary I (aka "Bloody Mary").
